Dave's Picks

I have eclectic tastes and a wide range of interests. I don't advocate a point of view here, just listing podcast sites on which I've discovered (and listened to) podcasts with interesting, informative and sometimes entertaining content. If you're interested in developing an expanded view of your world, these sources just might help you to do so in some small way.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  1. Authoritative (Subject Matter Expertise)
  2. Interesting and/or Educational
  3. Length (at least 10 minutes)
  4. Listen-ability (vocal and technical)
  5. Longevity (track record of episode/program continuity)

I will be creating a rating system and rating each audio podcast in the near future. As time goes on I will expand this site to include pages for multiple subjects/disciplines of interest to executives. Check back here two or three time a week.

  • 2600-The hacker quarterly and radio show. Interesting and somewhat entertaining this show reveals some of the "tricks of the trade." Subject content would interest techies and law enforcement/security types as well.
  • British Broadcasting Company (BBC)- Venerable institution, great commercial free reporting of world affairs as well as nuts and bolts subjects. Slightly left leaning.
  • BBC Free Online Radio Courses- Free high quality online courses about radio program production.
  • BBC Free Online TV Courses-Same as above but for TV program production.
  • Briefings Direct-Low-key advertorials billed as B2B Information podcasts. Discussions about various technologies with different company executives being interviewed.
  • BusinessWeek Behind This Week's Cover Story
  • C-SPAN Podcasts-Great for those interested in public affairs. I especially like the coverage of congressional hearings, minus the political posturing heard on occasion. My real introduction came while driving on a long trip. I was able to listen to the Clarence Thomas hearings. Later I listened to the entire 911 Commission hearings on another long distance trip.
  • Digital Convergence-Carl Olson is off to a great start. His episodes are an ideal length for me (30-50 minutes) making it worth listening to and following. This series looks at multimedia from the point of view of an accomplished still photographer moving to video.
  • Genesis Communications Network (Alternative radio) A variety of programs with some good preparedness shows. A few shows lean toward the ultra-right.
  • GAO-Government Accountability Office Watch Dog Report-Each report is only about five minutes in length which is shorter than I usually prefer but by downloading several segments most MP3 players should enable you to play each consecutively.
  • Invisible Hand Podcast-The podcast on business, economics and strategy, Heron & Crane began producing The Invisible Hand Podcast in October of 2005. This is an excellent podcast series with a very good host and high-level guest interview subjects. Definitely NOT just numbers nor dismal science.
  • Mitigation Journal-The focus of this series is "all hazards" for emergency managers. If you're involved in any type of public safety or corporate security work this is an excellent choice. Good length and quality. Most interesting are the interviews with guests.
  • New York Times-Like the BBC, authoritative but left leaning.
  • Pandora (Wide array of music genres)
  • RFE/RL-Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty
  • Reuters Breaking News
  • Securities And Exchange Commission
  • SpyCast-These are excellent monthly programs averaging about 40 minutes in length and feature very authoritative guest interviews from the International Spy Museum. The feature interviews and programs with ex-spies, intelligence experts, and espionage scholars. The SpyCast is hosted by Peter Earnest, Executive Director of the International Spy Museum and former CIA operations officer.
  • VOA-The Voice of America, which first went on the air in 1942, is an international multimedia broadcasting service funded by the U.S. government through the Broadcasting Board of Governors. VOA broadcasts approximately 1,500 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of 125 million people.
