MP3 is an audio format that is just about universal. Any common MP3 player can be loaded with files that you can listen to while you're on the move. How you load them onto a device is dependent upon the device itself. Most devices, including many smart phones, have a mini-USB connection that enables file transfer from a computer to the device. Finally, you can listen live via streaming media. This live format includes audio only and video as well. Streaming only audio is often due to copyright or licensing issues.
Why is most of this information and knowledge free? On a practical level it can be distributed on a low or no-cost basis. That means that there is a deluge of material, some of it bad, most of it so-so and some of it really great. The motivation ranges from promotional to altruistic.
